Dr. McMahon Addresses the Strategic Value of CME during FSMB Opening Session
Graham McMahon, MD, MMSc, President and CEO, ACCME, participated as a panelist in the opening session of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) 2015 Annual Meeting. Dr. McMahon told the participants that accredited CME is a strategic resource for change management in their states.
He described the scope of the ACCME system, which delivers approximately 140,000 activities each year, with more than one million hours of instruction. Accredited CME offers “an extremely important opportunity to promote quality improvement and safety and the evolution of medical care for our community,” he said.
Accredited CME has been proven effective for changing performance, attitudes, behavior, and the quality of care, Dr. McMahon said. Going beyond knowledge acquisition, almost 100% of accredited CME activities are designed to change competence/skill, more than 50% of activities are designed to change performance; and more than 20% are designed to change patient outcomes. CME is not “the sage on the stage in the dark room anymore,” he said.
He explained the role of accredited CME as a partner in public health initiatives and described how the ACCME is responding to the evolving healthcare environment by promoting interprofessional continuing education (IPCE) through Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education™.
He suggested that state boards could work with Recognized Accreditors and state-accredited providers to identify opportunities for accredited CME to promote engagement with healthcare professionals, address local healthcare needs, and support quality and safety initiatives.
In addition to Dr. McMahon, panelists included health-law expert Jack R. Bierig, JD, Sidley Austin; Margaret B. Hansen, PA-C, MPAS, Executive Director, South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners; and Donald H. Polk, DO, Chair, FSMB. The session was moderated by Humayun J. Chaudhry, DO, MACP, President and CEO, FSMB.
The opening session was webcast live to an international audience. You can view the archived webcast here.
The FSMB is an ACCME member organization. Dr. McMahon’s participation was part of the ongoing collaboration with member organizations. Through joint leadership initiatives, the ACCME and member organizations identify and implement strategies for improving physicians' continuing professional development and patient care.
