NEW COMMENDATION CRITERIA RESOURCES: ACHIEVES OUTCOMES
We are publishing a series of resources, as part of ACCME®’s efforts to provide education to support implementation of the Menu of Criteria for Accreditation with Commendation, our mechanism for recognizing and celebrating organizations that excel as CME providers. These resources include FAQs, short videos about each new commendation criterion, and examples of compliance.
There are 16 new commendation criteria, divided into 5 categories. To be eligible for commendation, providers will need to demonstrate compliance with any seven criteria of their choice, from any category—plus one criterion from the "Achieves Outcomes" category—for a total of eight criteria.
We’ll publish resources about one of the categories each month, beginning with the "Achieves Outcomes" category (Criteria 36–38), since providers will need to choose to comply with at least one of the outcomes criteria to achieve commendation.
We look forward to working together to ensure our CME community’s successful implementation of the new criteria to achieve our shared goal of advancing quality and achieving outcomes in post-graduate medical education.
As a reminder, as with the existing commendation criteria 16-22, compliance with the new commendation criteria will be optional for CME providers and is not required to achieve Accreditation. The ACCME submitted a letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) approaches detailed in the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015. The letter describes the value of accredited CME in supporting CMS goals. These comments built upon the themes reflected in ACCME’s earlier June 16, 2016 letteron the rule’s proposal.
“The accredited CME system is the national educational enterprise that supports the engagement of physicians and other health professionals in evidence-based lifelong learning and improvement,” writes Graham McMahon, MD, MMSc, President and CEO, ACCME. “Employing the existing CME framework routinely utilized by clinicians to meet their individual educational needs will simplify their ability to meet the requirements of the Quality Payment Program and would facilitate their participation.”
Dr. McMahon explains that the ACCME is well positioned to facilitate the evolution of the Quality Payment Program (which is part of MACRA) toward the CMS goal of an innovative, outcome-focused, patient-centered, resource-effective health system by:
- leveraging the accredited CME system to simplify clinician participation in the Quality Payment Program;
- supporting accredited CME providers; and
- utilizing the ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS) as a reporting mechanism for clinical practice improvement activities.
Many accredited CME providers are already actively engaged in performance and quality improvement activities, Dr. McMahon states, citing examples of accredited CME activities that may meet the expectations for quality and performance improvement outlined in MIPS.
“The ACCME’s educational system and technological framework can be engaged to support the implementation of MIPS and to help our clinician community maintain and advance the quality, safety, and efficiency of care for the patients we all serve,” Dr. McMahon concluded.

The Executive Summary of the ACCME Board of Directors meeting held December 1-2, 2016 is now available. Here are a few highlights:
Accreditation: The ACCME ratified 51 accreditation and reaccreditation decisions. This included 20 providers (39%) that received Accreditation with Commendation, which confers a 6-year term of accreditation, and 22 (43%) providers that received Accreditation. Four initial applicants received Provisional Accreditation.
Joint Accreditation™ for Interprofessional Continuing Education: Five providers received joint accreditation with a 6-year term and 3 providers received joint accreditation with a 4-year term. The decisions have also been ratified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). With these decisions, there are now 42 jointly accredited providers. There are 22 more providers in the application process.
Welcome to the new ACCME-accredited and jointly accredited providers and congratulations to all the providers receiving reaccreditation!
Substantial equivalency: The Board recognized the Qatar Council for Health Practitioners as substantially equivalent to the ACCME and reaffirmed the substantial equivalency of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Congratulations to our colleague accreditors!
CME research leadership discussions: The Board convened discussions with leaders in medical education research about the challenges and opportunities for research in CME.
Service awards: The Board had the privilege of honoring ACCME volunteers and paying special tribute to those who have demonstrated exemplary and long-term service to the ACCME. During this meeting the Board recognized volunteers who had completed their terms of service, and recognized those who had reached milestones in the number of surveys they have completed. Thank you, volunteers!

We’re moving our offices in early March 2017. We have a long-standing relationship with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), our colleague accreditor, and we had the opportunity to continue to co-locate when ACGME moved its offices. The new space will facilitate our continued collaboration with ACGME, sustain ACCME’s growth, and provide a more secure, cost-effective work environment.

- Coordinator of Accreditation and Recognition: As part of the ACCME Accreditation and Recognition team, the Coordinator provides support for approximately 1,900 accredited CME providers and 40 state medical societies recognized as accreditors by the ACCME.
- Technical Systems Support Analyst: The Technical Systems Support Analyst, in close collaboration with the project teams at the ACCME, will provide support for the implementation and continuous improvement of ACCME’s Accreditation Management System and Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS). This position will also be responsible for providing support and training to system users.
Reminders for Accredited Providers
To meet your year-end reporting requirements, providers must enter data for your 2016 activities and your 2016 program summary in the ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS). PARS is always open and we encourage you to start entering 2016 activity data now in anticipation of the year-end reporting deadline. You are welcome to enter basic information about an activity before it has taken place and complete the entry after the activity.
Deadline: For ACCME-accredited providers, the deadline for completing the 2016 year-end report is March 31, 2017. Providers accredited by a state medical society may be required to complete their 2016 year-end report earlier, and should check with their accreditor for information.

ACCME-Accredited Providers: On December 5, we sent invoices for the 2017 ACCME annual accreditation fee to the person designated by your organization as the billing contact. You can confirm the billing contact by logging into PARS. If you have not yet received your invoice, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. The 2017 fee is $5,500, and payment is due January 31, 2017.

- The Macy Faculty Scholars Program is accepting applications for 2017, with a deadline of February 15, 2017 at 3:00 pm. Eastern. The program is designed to identify and nurture the careers of promising educational innovators in medicine and nursing. It supports faculty scholars in leading new educational innovations at their home institutions and provides opportunities for further career development through participation in Macy activities.
