The provider collaborated with its Hospital Quality Improvement department and its departments of Obstetrics, Hematology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Hospitalists, Surgical PA’s and Nursing. The provider's Department of Hospital Quality Improvement convened a subcommittee on "Improving Physician-Patient Communications" in response to receiving lower than usual HCAHPS scores on metrics regarding the courtesy of its physicians and their abilities to listen and communicate. The provider developed three video cases on physician-patient communication and after one year reported significant improvements in all three HCAHPS measures. In addition, the provider partnered with an interdepartmental panel and its Hospital QI officer on longitudinal CME activities addressing rising rates of perioperative deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (PE/DVT), resulting in a lowering of the incidence of PE/DVT in the months following each CME activity provided.
