New Report Promotes Research in Interprofessional Continuing Education
Continuing Education Leaders Share Strategies for Conducting and Publishing Research on the Effectiveness of IPCE

A new report, Promoting Research across the Continuum of Health Professions Education: Making Patient Care Better, explores recommendations for advancing research on the effectiveness of interprofessional continuing education (IPCE) in improving healthcare team performance and patient care.
The report summarizes the 2017 Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education Leadership Summit, which brought together continuing education (CE) leaders from 30 institutions across the country including hospitals, health systems, medical schools, specialty societies, and education companies. Participants shared strategies, best practices, and case studies for conducting and disseminating research that shows how IPCE programs contribute to measurable improvements in team care and patient outcomes.
This report serves as an addendum to the 2016 report, By the Team for the Team: Evolving Interprofessional Continuing Education™ for Optimal Patient Care-Report from the 2016 Joint Accreditation Leadership Summit.
The Leadership Summits and reports were supported (in part) by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. They were produced by the three collaborating accreditors in Joint Accreditation: the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Highlights from the Report
- Research recommendations: Invited guest Scott Reeves, PhD, MSc, PGCE, BSc, Professor in Interprofessional Research at Kingston University and St. George’s University of London, and Editor in Chief of the Journal of Interprofessional Care, offered recommendations for how to successfully conduct and publish research.
- Addressing health priorities: Summit participants explored real-world examples of research projects that are part of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education’s Nexus Innovations Network, a community of practice and education collaborations. These projects are addressing health priorities such as rural population health, obesity prevention, advance care planning, and caring for underserved populations.
- Collaboration across the continuum: Participants shared their experiences bringing together students, faculty, and practicing clinicians from across the health professions to create environments throughout the continuum of education that support interprofessional collaborative practice and build effective interprofessional teams.
