ACCME Responds to Senate Committee on Finance Report

Chicago, IL
August 3, 2007

The ACCME Board of Directors met in retreat July 19-20, 2007 to discuss the ongoing implementation of the 2004 ACCME Standards for Commercial Support and the concerns raised by the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance.  The ACCME has communicated the results of this retreat to Senators Baucus and Grassley in response to their April 2007 letter to the ACCME, press release, and staff report.

As you will recognize, the ACCME remains resolute in its efforts to ensure that continuing medical education offered by accredited providers is independent and free of commercial bias, and it has developed an action plan for strengthening the current safeguards of independence, monitoring the effectiveness of those safeguards, and identifying improvements that will be implemented by the system.

The implementation of this action plan will engage the entire CME enterprise in the development of solutions.  To view a copy of the August 2007 letter from the ACCME to the Senate Committee on Finance, please click here.
