IOM Forum and Report Address Interprofessional Education
Graham McMahon, MD, MMSc, President and CEO, ACCME, was invited to participate in a meeting of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education. Held in April in Washington, DC, the meeting addressed issues important to health professional education across the continuum, including interprofessional continuing education (IPCE). Dr. McMahon participated as part of the ACCME’s commitment to supporting IPCE and interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP).
The IOM issued a report, Measuring the Impact of Interprofessional Education (IPE) on Collaborative Practice and Patient Outcomes, recommending actions that interprofessional stakeholders, funders, and policy members can take to measure the impact of IPE on collaborative practice, as well as patient, population, and health system outcomes. The report describes Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education™ as one of the resources that may be “especially powerful” in improving the alignment of education and healthcare delivery systems.
