New educational resources about the “Promotes Team-based Education” category of the new commendation criteria are now available. Visit the ACCME website for an overview, video, FAQ, and compliance examples for Criteria 23-25.
These resources are part of a series ACCME is publishing to support implementation of the Menu of Criteria for Accreditation with Commendation, our mechanism for recognizing and celebrating organizations that excel as CME providers.
There are 16 new commendation criteria, divided into 5 categories. To be eligible for commendation, providers will need to demonstrate compliance with any seven criteria of their choice, from any category—plus one criterion from the Achieves Outcomes category—for a total of eight criteria. If you missed it last month, you can find the resources for the Achieves Outcomes category on the ACCME website.
We look forward to working together to ensure our CME community’s successful implementation of the new criteria to achieve our shared goal of advancing quality and achieving outcomes in post-graduate medical education.
As a reminder, as with the existing commendation criteria 16-22, compliance with the new commendation criteria is optional for CME providers and is not required to achieve Accreditation. We are pleased to announce the following updates to support the alignment between accredited CME and Maintenance of Certification (MOC).
More CME Activity Types Now Count for ABIM’s MOC Program
CME providers can now register two new activity types, Manuscript Review and Learning from Teaching, for American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points through ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS). Both have been added to the list of eligible activity types to offer more flexibility and diversity for CME providers and physicians. Activities are eligible for registration if they meet the specific requirements of ABIM. For the complete list of eligible activity types, see this FAQ.
By spring 2017, ABIM and ACCME plan to recognize even more accredited CME. In addition to Medical Knowledge activities, physicians will be able to earn MOC points for Practice Assessment activities and blended activities that earn both Medical Knowledge and Practice Assessment MOC points.
CME Finder Expanded to Include ABA and ABP MOC
We’ve expanded CMEFinder.org, ACCME’s online tool. It now includes accredited CME activities that are registered for the MOC programs of the American Board of Anesthesiology® (ABA®) and American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), in addition to ABIM. If you haven’t done so already, please consider registering any appropriate activities for ABA, ABIM, and ABP MOC in PARS. By doing so, you benefit physicians by offering more options for high-quality education that best meets their needs. We encourage you to submit data prospectively into PARS so that it appears in the CME Finder, enabling physicians to learn about your activities.

- Join ACCME for a webinar with the ABA, ABIM, and ABP on Wednesday, March 15 from 2:00-3:00 pm Central to learn more about registering activities for MOC credit. We’ll share the successes of the past year’s collaborations and insights from CME providers that have already been registering activities for MOC, discuss the new developments and opportunities that are expected in the coming year, and answer your questions. We are honored that the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (ACEhp) recognized the collaborative work of ABIM and the ACCME by presenting us with its 2017 Award for Outstanding Educational Collaboration at the ACEhp annual conference in January. The award is given to exceptional continuing education professionals and leaders “who are paving the way to improve patient care through education.”
Specifically, ACEhp recognized ABIM and ACCME’s collaboration in support of physician lifelong learning as part of the CME that Counts for ABIM MOC program we created in response to the needs and requests of physicians and CME providers. The goal of our collaboration is to expand the number and diversity of accredited CME activities that also count for ABIM MOC points, and to streamline the process for registering CME activities in ABIM's MOC program. The collaboration is achieving its goal: In the first 18 months, more than 200 accredited CME providers registered about 6,500 activities that count for ABIM MOC in PARS; more than 190,000 learner completion records have been reported in PARS, totaling more than 1.6 million MOC points. Nearly 2,900 activities are currently available for CME that also counts for ABIM MOC are listed in CME Finder.
The ACCME also participated in several sessions at the ACEhp annual conference. Graham McMahon, MD, MMSc, ACCME President and CEO presented “Shaping Our Profession, Demonstrating Our Value,” where – in addition to discussing ACCME’s new commendation criteria, the value of interprofessional continuing education, and ACCME’s recent collaborations – Dr. McMahon shared his thoughts on how CME providers can best meet learners’ needs.
During the session, Dr. McMahon discussed how the role of the CME provider has changed. “We have to get away from our tradition of giving credit for one-and-done sorts of activities and assuming that that’s adequate, because if we’re really thinking about educational transformation, we have to be thinking about education that’s just in time—not just in down time.” For more on Dr. McMahon’s session, read “Stop the Crazy Thinking About CME,” a recap by MeetingsNet.
ACCME staff also participated in several other sessions, including a workshop on the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support: Standards to Ensure Independence in CME Activities℠, the medical schools member section meeting, and an accreditors update with colleagues from the American Academy of PAs, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. Later, Dr. McMahon also participated in a talk about cultural diversity in accreditation systems, and a session about how to create a culture of performance improvement for clinicians in practice. We were also delighted to have many of the ACCME surveyors join us for the 2017 Surveyors’ Breakfast.

Over the past several months, the ACCME Board of Directors and staff have been reflecting on ACCME’s identity as represented by our logo, as part of our efforts to build visibility for our community and better communicate the value of accreditation and accredited CME. We’ve developed new materials, including a new logo and color palette that emphasizes the lifelong journey of learning and captures the forward, upward, and ongoing trajectory of the CME community’s work. We plan to implement the new logo and tagline on our website and in our other materials within the next few months. Watch for our upcoming announcement — we look forward to sharing this update with you soon!
Upcoming Educational Activities
We are hard at work planning for the ACCME’s inaugural expanded educational event, the ACCME 2017 Meeting, on April 24-27! We will be joined by participants from across the CME and healthcare communities, and we look forward to exploring how accreditation supports the evolution, innovation, and alignment that advances health professional practice and patient care. We look forward to engaging in strategic discussion and sharing practical skills and tools to help you successfully lead your CME program.

Tips and Tools
ACCME requirements are designed to ensure that accredited CME provides a safe place for learning, independent of commercial influence and conflicts of interest. To support compliance with the ACCME Standards for Commercial SupportSM: Standards to Ensure the Independence of CME Activities, we've created a flowchart tool you can use to identify relevant financial relationships and resolve conflicts of interests in CME activities. The flowchart is intended to help CME providers and stakeholders involved in planning CME activities successfully meet ACCME expectations by following a simple, step-by-step guide.
Collaboration and Engagement
Accredited providers can now offer a new benefit to German physicians who participate in their activities. The German State Chambers of Physicians will now automatically recognize certificates of attendance for live, in-person CME activities organized by accredited providers in the ACCME System. These activities must take place in the United States or its territories. If a provider wants to offer accredited CME in Germany, the provider needs to apply for recognition from the appropriate Chamber in order for German physicians to receive credit.
The German Medical Association recognized the equivalency of providers in the ACCME System following an assessment of the ACCME by the German Medical Association last year. This decision is limited to five years, expiring in November 2021.
We appreciate the German Medical Association and the German State Chambers of Physicians for this opportunity, which will enable our accredited providers to offer more options for German physicians to participate in high-quality CME.

The ACCME is continuing to enhance its services to the CME community in support of its strategic goals. Toward that end, we have several positions available for interested, dedicated individuals who would like to join our staff. Detailed position descriptions and qualification requirements for each opening as well as application information are available on our Careers webpage.
- Administrative Assistant, Education and Outreach: The Administrative Assistant will support the ACCME Department of Education and Outreach in planning and coordinating educational activities for CME providers, intrastate accreditors, volunteers, and other system stakeholders.
- Applications Analyst: The Applications Analyst, a new position at ACCME, will contribute to the planning and implementation of improvements to ACCME's web applications, including the Accreditation Management System (AMS) and Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS).
- Coordinator of Accreditation and Recognition: As part of the ACCME Accreditation and Recognition team, the Coordinator will provide support for approximately 1,900 accredited CME providers and 40 state medical societies recognized as accreditors by the ACCME.
- Executive Assistant: The Executive Assistant will provide administrative support to the President/CEO and Executive Vice President of the ACCME. This will include coordinating the activities of the President/CEO and Executive Vice President, serving as backup to the for phones and general email, and contributing to projects related to the successful execution of President/EVP's duties.
Reminders for Accredited Providers
To meet your year-end reporting requirements, providers must enter data for your 2016 activities and your 2016 program summary in the ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS) by March 31, 2017. PARS is always open and we encourage you to start entering 2016 activity data now in anticipation of the year-end reporting deadline. Providers accredited by a state medical society may be required to complete their 2016 year-end report earlier, and should check with their accreditor for information. We’re moving our offices in early March 2017. We have a long-standing relationship with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), our colleague accreditor, and we had the opportunity to continue to co-locate when ACGME moved its offices. The new space will facilitate our continued collaboration with ACGME, sustain ACCME’s growth, and provide a more secure, cost-effective work environment.

- The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) released its 2015/2016 Board Certification Report, which offers a wide variety of statistics, information, and data about the specialty certification programs administered by the 24 Member Boards that comprise ABMS.
- The ABMS Visiting Scholars Program is accepting applications for the 2017-2018 class. The one-year, part-time program facilitates professional development and scholarship. Early career physicians, junior faculty, fellows, residents, and individuals holding advanced degrees in public health, health services research, and other relevant disciplines are invited to apply.
