We are pleased to announce a new collaboration with the American Board of Pathology (ABPath) to simplify the integration of accredited continuing medical education (CME) and Continuing Certification (formerly Maintenance of Certification or MOC).
The collaboration will facilitate the ability of ABPath diplomates to participate in high-quality accredited CME that meets the ABPath Continuing Certification requirements for Lifelong Learning (Part II), Self-Assessment Modules (SAM), and Improvement in Medical Practice (Part IV).
All accredited CME providers in the ACCME System already use the Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS) to enter data about each of their CME activities. CME providers now have the option to also use PARS to register activities that began on or after January 1, 2018 for ABPath Continuing Certification. CME providers that choose to participate will use PARS to attest their activities’ compliance with ABPath Continuing Certification requirements.

To meet your year-end reporting requirements, you must enter data for your 2017 activities and your 2017 program summary in the ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS). For ACCME-accredited providers, the deadline for completing your 2017 year-end reporting requirements is April 2, 2018. Providers accredited by a state medical society may be required to complete their 2017 year-end report earlier, and should check with their accreditor for information.
We've made enhancements to the Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS).To access PARS, go to pars.accme.org as usual, where you will be taken to a new login screen. When you login for the first time, you’ll need to reset your password by clicking on “Can’t login or forgot your password?” in the login screen. Please note that the first time you access PARS, there is a delay while the application is loading. After the first time, it loads much more quickly.

We are pleased to announce that we are collaborating with the Board of Medical Examiners in Tennessee to launch a voluntary, year-long pilot program that will enable CME providers to report physician participation in CME directly to the Board. This will simplify the process for physicians, who will not have to report their participation themselves.
Twelve accredited CME providers have volunteered to participate in the pilot, which begins in June 2018. The CME providers will collect participant data, including each physician’s name, national provider identifier (NPI) or Tennessee license number, and the day and month of the physician’s birth. They will upload this data into the system they already use to report activities, the ACCME Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS). This information will then be shared proactively with the Board.
The ACCME and the Board are engaging in this collaboration because they share the goal of reducing regulatory burdens on physician learners. We thank the CME providers who have volunteered to participate. Their feedback and experience will inform our efforts going forward. If the pilot is successful, the ACCME's goal is to explore similar collaborations with other state boards.
The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) recently published “Managing Our Most Precious Resource: Burnout Dissatisfaction and the Future of our Profession,” an editorial by ACCME President and CEO, Graham T. McMahon, MD, MMSc, in response to a recent iCOMPARE (Individualized Comparative Effectiveness of Models Optimizing Patient Safety and Resident Education) trial showing high rates of resident burnout. In the editorial, Dr. McMahon observes that many residents and physicians today are focused on surviving rather than thriving, stating, “With increasing commoditization, commercialization, productivity targets, and administrative burdens, the volunteerism and soul that have typified our profession for generations are suffering.” Health system and education leaders need to, “hear the sentinel plea of residents to reform our clinical learning environments to prioritize people,” concludes Dr. McMahon.

This photo from a recent Pediatric Grand Rounds session at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center shows, through the creative use of technology in CME, how a patient was able to join the conversation from her home, via Skype. This session was planned and led by members of the Patient Advisory and Family Advisory Councils, who partnered with their care providers to discuss how partnership leads to improved care.
Academy for Continued Healthcare Learning’s photo gives us a behind the scenes look at the making of their interactive digital guidebook, which will address the challenges of the community hospital to aid hematologists, oncologists, and transplant surgeons in the treatment of patients with invasive fungal infections, particularly in immunocompromised or immunosuppressed patients. As seen in the photo, green screen video clips will be used to enhance the text-based content.

- MAACME Call for Abstracts: The Mid-Atlantic Alliance for CME (MAACME) is looking for breakout session and poster presenters for its annual conference November 15 in Atlantic City, NJ. MAACME invites members and non-members from academic settings, hospitals, medical education companies, associations, pharma industry staff, and related organizations to participate. The deadline for abstract proposal submissions is end of day Monday, April 23.
